Mat Kallada

About Me:

Hey, it's Mat! I enjoy learning new things and finding creative solutions to challenging problems. I was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia and studied at Dalhousie University. I've worked on a variety of projects such as developing AI models for healthcare and AI models for forecasting weather & traffic conditions. I started programming as a youngster and have always had a passion for working on ambitious high-impact projects alongside talented colleagues.

I've worked on a bunch of different projects over the years. Some are listed below.

Forecasting Weather and Traffic Conditions using Machine Learning

While I was a student, I worked as an undergraduate researcher on applying machine learning methods for forecasting future weather and traffic conditions. I reached out to a local surveillance camera company to ask whether I could perform machine learning on their feeds; I took that dataset to a professor and we started doing research on it. I co-authored papers of our research at the 28th Canadian Conference on Artificial Intelligence and the 2015 International Conference on Image Processing, Computer Vision, and Pattern Recognition.

Meta-Learning Algorithms

This was a senior undergraduate research project where I investigated improving the performance of different meta-learning protocols. Upon graduating from university, I moved to Montreal and continued performing research on this topic at Mila with my collaborators. Here's an Invited Talk at the Perimeter Institute that I gave discussing some of our research.

STAT 2450: An Introductory Machine Learning Course

This was a machine learning course for early-year undergraduate students that I independently proposed and taught the first offering of, at Dalhousie. I developed the entire course curriculum, lecture notes, assessments, etc. I subsequently reached out to professors to help formalize the course and they thought it was a great idea. I wanted to take on the challenge of simplifying intricate machine learning concepts for early-year undergraduate students. I'm extremely proud to say that this is now a required course for statistics majors at Dalhousie. Link to Course Description.
